GMAT Exam: Complete Exam Overview

Current GMAT structure

The GMAT is designed for graduate business and management admissions. The current exam has three sections: Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, and Data Insights. GMAC lists 64 questions and a total testing time of 2 hours and 15 minutes, plus one optional 10-minute break. Each scored section lasts 45 minutes.

Quantitative Reasoning contains 21 questions and focuses on arithmetic, algebra, problem solving, and logical use of quantitative information. Verbal Reasoning contains 23 questions centered on Reading Comprehension and Critical Reasoning. Data Insights contains 20 questions that require candidates to analyze information from multiple sources and formats and make decisions using data.

How to use the exam design in preparation

Because all three sections contribute to the total score, preparation should not ignore a weaker area in favor of a favorite section. Start with an official diagnostic and classify misses by skill and cause. Quantitative work should emphasize efficient setup and reasoning rather than lengthy calculation. Verbal review should focus on passage structure, argument logic, assumptions, evidence, and careful elimination. Data Insights practice should combine numerical reasoning with interpretation of tables, graphics, and multi-source information.

Timing and review strategy

The current exam allows candidates to move through sections in a chosen order and includes review-and-edit functionality within the rules published by GMAC. Practice should therefore include a deliberate pacing plan: answer solvable questions efficiently, flag uncertainty when the interface allows it, and reserve time to review without sacrificing the end of a section.

Use official GMAT practice resources for current question styles and interface behavior. Older prep aimed at the previous four-section GMAT can mislead students about the present structure.

Data Insights deserves separate practice because it combines quantitative and verbal reasoning with tables, graphics, and multiple sources. Train yourself to identify the decision being asked for before processing every detail; this reduces unnecessary work and improves pacing across unfamiliar data displays.
