Start with current official GMAT material
GMAC's Official Starter Kit includes free Practice Exams 1 and 2, sample questions and access to the Official Prep platform. These resources are designed around the current GMAT. That matters because older books and videos may still teach a retired exam structure or use an outdated score scale.
Use the first official practice exam as a diagnostic
Take one official full-length practice exam early enough that the result can change your study plan. Reproduce test conditions: three 45-minute sections, one optional 10-minute break, no casual pausing, and the section order you currently expect to use. Record both scores and timing behavior.
What to review after a practice test

Build an error log that changes behavior
Do not record only the right answer. For each important miss, write the reason: misunderstood prompt, missing concept, wrong inference, arithmetic slip, rushed elimination, over-invested time or changed a correct answer without evidence. Then assign one corrective action. An error log is useful only if the same error becomes less likely next week.
Practice timing, not just questions
The GMAT penalizes unanswered questions. That makes completion a scoring skill. Train pacing in short sets before expecting yourself to manage a full 45-minute section. Track checkpoints and learn when to make a controlled best choice rather than spend several minutes protecting one question.
Use Review and Edit deliberately
You may review questions after completing a section and edit up to three answers if time remains. Practice this feature on official full-length exams. Bookmark only questions with a real reason for review. Do not turn the final minutes into random answer changing.
A simple full-length practice schedule
- Diagnostic official exam at the start of the plan.
- Two to three weeks of targeted section work.
- Second official full-length exam under strict conditions.
- Repair the largest remaining weakness.
- Take another high-quality full-length exam near the end of preparation if available in your study plan.
- Reduce new-content study in the final days and focus on execution, sleep and pacing.
How much should one score move before you book?
Do not demand one magic diagnostic number. Look for a stable pattern across several timed sets and at least one realistic full-length exam. A single unusually high practice score is weaker evidence than a consistent range. Book when your normal performance supports the score range needed for your target programs.
