GMAT Test Dates 2026: Year-Round Scheduling, Retakes and Deadlines

GMAT does not use a small fixed list of national test dates

Unlike exams that are offered on only a few Saturdays each year, the GMAT is appointment-based. GMAC says GMAT appointments are available year-round, subject to local test-center capacity and online availability. That means the best GMAT date is not a single national date. It is the appointment that gives you enough preparation time and still leaves a safe buffer before your business-school deadlines.

How far ahead can you book?

GMAC says appointments can typically be scheduled up to six months in advance. Test-center availability varies by city, while online appointments are available around the clock in many regions. During busy admissions periods, the date or time you want may disappear, so candidates with a firm application deadline should not wait until the last minute.

Work backward from your MBA deadline

Start with the earliest application deadline that matters to you. Then reserve time for the official score to become available, for schools to receive it, and for a possible retake if your result is below your target range. GMAC says official scores are typically available within three to five days, but some can take up to 20 days. A candidate applying to a high-stakes round should build more than the minimum score-reporting time into the plan.

A practical date-selection method

1. List your target programs and their application deadlines.
2. Choose the earliest deadline as your anchor.
3. Subtract a score-reporting buffer of at least several days, preferably more.
4. If a retake could be needed, leave at least the required 16 days between attempts plus time to prepare differently.
5. Check test-center and online appointments in your mba.com account.
6. Choose a date only after your full-length official practice results are near your target range.

Test center or online?

GMAC states that the content, scoring and skills measured are the same for the test-center and online versions. The test center gives you a standardized environment and managed equipment. Online testing can offer more scheduling flexibility, but you are responsible for your computer, internet connection, webcam, microphone and private testing space. Pick the mode that reduces avoidable risk for you.

Do not book only because a date is available

An open appointment is not automatically a good appointment. If your official practice scores are far below the range you need, testing early can create an unnecessary attempt. The GMAT score remains valid for five years, so candidates who are ready can also test well before an application season rather than compressing preparation into the weeks before a deadline.

Retake planning

GMAC currently permits five GMAT attempts in a rolling 12-month period and requires at least 16 days between attempts. There is no lifetime limit under the current policy. Still, a retake should have a reason: a clear pacing problem, a specific section weakness, a disrupted test day or reliable practice evidence showing that your official result is below your normal level.
