What changed in the TOEFL iBT in 2026

ETS introduced a major TOEFL iBT update beginning January 21, 2026. The test still measures Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking, but the current version uses an adaptive experience and updated task types. ETS advises allowing about two hours for the test, with exact time and item counts able to vary as the adaptive test responds to performance.

Current sections and base timing

ETS lists Reading with about 50 items and a 30-minute base time, Listening with about 47 items and 29 minutes, Writing with about 12 items and 23 minutes, and Speaking with about 11 items and 8 minutes. Reading includes word-completion, daily-life reading, and academic-passage tasks. Listening includes responses, conversations, announcements, and academic talks. Writing includes sentence-building, email, and academic-discussion tasks, while Speaking includes listen-and-repeat and interview-style tasks.

Because the format is adaptive, students should not treat those item counts as a rigid promise for every administration. The more useful preparation goal is to become comfortable switching among short language tasks while maintaining accuracy and control under time pressure.

Scoring and preparation

Current TOEFL iBT score reports use a 1-to-6 scale in half-point increments for the four sections and the overall score. ETS is also providing a comparable overall score on the older 0-to-120 scale during a transition period after the January 2026 change. Preparation should therefore focus on current-format official material rather than older practice sets that assume the pre-2026 task mix.

Use ETS practice resources to diagnose weaknesses in comprehension, listening accuracy, written expression, grammar control, and spoken fluency. Practice on a computer and rehearse note-taking methods that are permitted under the current rules.

For the adaptive Reading and Listening sections, prioritize steady accuracy rather than trying to infer how the algorithm is reacting. Mix short current-format drills with complete timed section practice, and review whether errors came from vocabulary, missed detail, inference, note taking, or rushing.
