MCAT overview

What the MCAT assesses

The Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) is developed and administered by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). It is designed to assess scientific knowledge, reasoning, analysis, and the application of concepts that are important for success in medical education. The exam is organized into four scored sections: Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems; Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills; Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems; and Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior.

Current section structure

AAMC's 2026 exam information lists 59 questions for Chemical and Physical Foundations, 53 questions for Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills, 59 questions for Biological and Biochemical Foundations, and 59 questions for Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations. The official schedule lists 6 hours and 15 minutes of content time, with additional time for the tutorial, breaks, certification, and end-of-day steps.

The science sections require more than memorization. Candidates must connect foundational concepts with data, experimental reasoning, and biological systems. CARS emphasizes comprehension and reasoning from passages without requiring outside subject-matter knowledge. AAMC's content outline is the best starting point for defining what is in scope.

How to build an MCAT plan

Start by comparing your academic background with the official content outline. Use a diagnostic or official sample test to identify gaps, then divide preparation into content review, passage-based application, and timed full-length practice. When reviewing missed questions, identify whether the problem came from missing knowledge, incorrect interpretation of a passage or figure, faulty reasoning, or pacing. That distinction helps determine the next study action.

AAMC provides free and paid official preparation resources, including a content-outline course, sample questions, and practice exams. Use secure materials only as permitted. The MCAT is a confidential examination, so Exams.fit does not reproduce or reconstruct protected questions, passages, graphics, or answer choices.

What to verify with AAMC

Registration windows, fees, testing locations, identification rules, accommodations, and score-release schedules can change by testing year. Candidates should confirm those items in the current MCAT Essentials and AAMC registration system before acting. This page's primary source was checked on September 14, 2026 and is scheduled for another review before March 14, 2027, or sooner after a material AAMC announcement.
