New USMLE Interface 2026: 30-Minute Blocks and Software Changes

All three USMLE Step exams now use the updated software

USMLE completed its 2026 test-delivery software rollout in stages: Step 3 began using the new system for exams starting March 10, Step 2 CK for exams on or after May 7, and Step 1 for exams on or after May 14. As of mid-May 2026, all three Step exams use the updated interface.

The important point is that the software changed, but USMLE says the exam content, total number of items and overall exam-day length did not change because of the transition. The biggest operational change is that the exams now have more blocks and shorter blocks.

What changed on screen?

USMLE says the new delivery software has an updated visual design, improved keyboard navigation, a settings menu and the ability to adjust image contrast. These are usability changes, not new medical-content domains. Candidates should still prepare from the current content outline, official sample questions and their medical-school curriculum.

Why the 30-minute blocks matter

Shorter blocks change the rhythm of the day. You make more block-start and block-end transitions, and once a block is closed you cannot return to it. That means time management should be practiced at the 30-minute level rather than only as a full-day average. A candidate who is used to 60-minute blocks should rehearse the new format before test day.

Step 1 after May 14, 2026

Step 1 is now divided into fourteen 30-minute blocks during an approximately eight-hour test day. The overall exam still contains no more than 280 items, and each block contains no more than 20 items. USMLE also lists at least 55 minutes of break time and a 5-minute optional tutorial for the current format.

Step 2 CK after May 7, 2026

Step 2 CK is now divided into sixteen 30-minute blocks during a nine-hour test day. The number of questions per block does not exceed 20. The new setup replaces the older eight 60-minute-block structure. Practice pacing in the current official interactive experience rather than using an old interface as your only rehearsal.

Step 3 and the new software

Step 3 adopted the new delivery software first. Its two-day structure remains, including computer-based case simulations, but the multiple-choice portions use more, shorter blocks. Candidates should review the current Step 3 interactive testing experience because its workflow is more relevant than screenshots from older prep material.

4. Test image-contrast settings on sample images before exam day.
5. Practice ending a block without relying on the ability to return later.
6. Build break planning around the current block structure.

Interface preparation does not require leaked or recalled exam content. Use the official sample questions and interactive tools on USMLE.org, plus legitimate educational resources.
