PSAT/NMSQT 2026: the official fall testing window

College Board lists October 1 through October 30, 2026 as the fall in-school testing window for the PSAT/NMSQT. Unlike the weekend SAT, students generally do not register for the PSAT/NMSQT through the regular SAT registration flow. Schools and districts handle the administration, so the exact day inside the October window depends on the participating school.

Do students need to register themselves?

College Board states that students taking PSAT-related in-school assessments do not register on their own; schools or districts handle registration. If you are unsure whether your school offers the PSAT/NMSQT or which October date it selected, ask your school counselor or testing coordinator. Do not assume a date used by another school applies to you.

What the 2026 PSAT/NMSQT looks like

The standard PSAT/NMSQT takes 134 minutes and contains 98 questions. Reading and Writing is 64 minutes with 54 questions. Math is 70 minutes with 44 questions. Each section is divided into two modules. The test is delivered in Bluebook for standard digital testing.

What changed for fall 2026?

College Board says new full-length PSAT/NMSQT practice tests became available in Bluebook for the 2026-27 testing year. The Bluebook experience also includes updated tool behavior such as a resizable embedded calculator and improved viewing of reference sheets, charts and images. Students using Chromebooks need the testing environment required by their school.

Your September checklist

  1. Ask your school for its exact PSAT/NMSQT date inside the October 1-30 window.
  2. Confirm which device you will use and follow your school's Bluebook setup instructions.
  3. Complete any required readiness check or exam setup before test day.
  4. Use a current full-length Bluebook practice test instead of relying only on older paper timing.
  5. If National Merit eligibility matters to you, read the current program information and answer entry questions carefully.
  6. Review your school's arrival time, room assignment and ID instructions.

What to know about test-day rules

College Board's PSAT/NMSQT rules were revised September 9, 2026. Students testing digitally follow directions from testing staff and Bluebook. The test has two sections, each with two modules, and students cannot return to a module after leaving it. Students testing at a school they do not regularly attend must bring acceptable photo ID. Unauthorized smart devices or attempts to gain an unfair advantage can lead to score cancellation or other consequences.

What if your school uses a different schedule?

Schools may choose different dates within the official window, and state testing arrangements can affect local scheduling. Your school's current instructions control the actual date and room assignment. The national window is useful for planning, but it is not a personal admission ticket.

When will scores come out?

Fall 2026 in-school score release depends on when answer submissions are completed. College Board currently lists student release dates of October 22, November 5 and November 12 for the main fall submission groups. See the PSAT/NMSQT 2026 score-release guide for the exact table and state-program caveat.

How to prepare without overstudying

Use one full diagnostic to identify the largest issue: Reading and Writing accuracy, Math content, pacing or digital navigation. Then spend most practice time on the largest repeatable weakness. The PSAT/NMSQT is not improved by endlessly retaking full tests without review. Use the Bluebook practice plan for a current-format workflow.

National Merit connection

The PSAT/NMSQT is the qualifying assessment used by National Merit Scholarship Corporation for eligible students. A high total score alone does not automatically establish recognition; NMSC uses a separate Selection Index and program eligibility rules. See the Selection Index guide before relying on unofficial cutoff charts.
