Praxis Practice Test 2026: Official Prep, Study Companions and a Better Study Plan
Start with the exact Praxis test code
Praxis preparation works best when every resource matches the assessment you actually need. Before opening a practice set, verify the test code on your state's requirements page. A strong score on questions for the wrong Praxis assessment does not move you closer to licensure.
Use the official Study Companion first
ETS provides a Study Companion for many Praxis tests. It is useful because it shows the test blueprint, content areas, question formats, sample questions and study guidance. Treat it as the map for your preparation. Third-party material can be useful later, but it should not replace the official outline.
Registration can include an Interactive Practice Test
ETS currently says candidates receive a free Interactive Practice Test for the corresponding subject when they register, with some exceptions. That makes registration-linked official practice especially valuable for checking whether your timing and content review match the real assessment.
A better diagnostic method
- Take a representative official practice set under realistic timing.
- Label each miss by content area, not just question number.
- Separate knowledge gaps from reading, calculation or pacing errors.
- Rank the categories by frequency and impact.
- Spend the next study block on the highest-value weakness.
Do not measure progress only by percent correct
A rising practice percentage is helpful, but it can hide repeated weaknesses if you keep practicing familiar questions. Track error types. If most misses come from one algebra topic, a teaching-reading subskill or a specific constructed-response task, fix that category directly.
How to use Praxis Steps practice
If your state uses a Steps-enabled Elementary Education Fundamentals test, align practice with the content category for the Step you plan to take. This is one advantage of modular testing: preparation can be more targeted. Still, use the full official blueprint so you understand how the Step fits into the broader licensure assessment.
Four-part weekly cycle
| Phase | Goal |
|---|---|
| Learn | Review one priority content category using the Study Companion and reliable coursework. |
| Apply | Answer focused questions without rushing. |
| Time | Practice a mixed set under realistic pacing. |
| Review | Explain every miss and update your error log. |
How often should you take a full practice test?
Not every day. Full-length practice is most useful when you need to measure endurance, timing and overall readiness. Between full tests, targeted work usually produces more improvement because it gives you time to correct specific weaknesses.
Use sample questions actively
After answering, explain why the correct choice is correct and why each tempting wrong choice fails. For constructed-response or writing tasks, compare your response structure with the official scoring expectations rather than only reading a model answer.
At-home candidates should rehearse the environment
If you will test at home, include a technical rehearsal before your final practice week. Run the system check, verify webcam and microphone, and make sure the testing room can meet current rules. Technical readiness is part of test readiness.
State passing score should influence the plan - not distort it
Know your state's qualifying score, but do not study to barely scrape a guessed cutoff. Practice performance can fluctuate, and unofficial raw percentages do not convert cleanly into every scaled Praxis score. Aim for stable command of the tested content.
A simple two-week finishing plan
Days 14-10: finish the largest content gaps. Days 9-7: complete a mixed timed set and review deeply. Days 6-4: fix the last two repeatable weaknesses. Days 3-2: take a final representative practice set and review only. Day 1: light review, logistics and sleep rather than a new content sprint.
