Praxis Core: Focused Review Notes
Praxis Core focused review map
These notes organize preparation around the three Praxis Core areas and should be used with current ETS materials. Praxis Core includes Reading (5713), Writing (5723), and Mathematics (5733). Current ETS materials list 85 minutes and 56 questions for Reading, 100 minutes with 40 selected-response questions plus two essays for Writing, and 90 minutes with 56 questions for Mathematics. State requirements and accepted tests vary, so candidates should confirm their jurisdiction before registering.
Reading
Anchor every answer in the passage or statement. Separate the central idea from supporting detail, identify relationships among claims, notice transitions and structure, and distinguish what the text states from what can reasonably be inferred. When two choices seem plausible, return to the exact wording and ask which option has stronger textual support.
Writing
Review sentence boundaries, agreement, pronoun reference, modifiers, punctuation, concision, organization, transitions, and revision in context. For research skills, focus on source credibility, relevance, citation elements, and matching a source to a research purpose. For essays, plan a clear controlling idea, organize supporting reasons or source-based points, use specific evidence, and leave time for a final clarity check.
Mathematics
Practice translating words, tables, graphs, and diagrams into mathematical relationships. Revisit fractions, ratios, percent, rates, algebraic expressions and equations, geometry formulas, descriptive statistics, probability, and data interpretation. Write units, estimate before calculating when useful, and check whether the final value is reasonable in context.
Active-recall error log
For every meaningful miss, record the tested skill, why the first approach failed, the corrected reasoning step, and a trigger that should remind you to use that step next time. Reattempt the skill after a delay. A correct response is not fully mastered until you can explain why the answer works and why the strongest distractor does not.
Final checklist
Confirm the accepted Praxis tests and passing requirements for your jurisdiction, use the current ETS test pages and Study Companions as the authority for official structure, and keep practice focused on reasoning rather than memorizing recalled items. Build consistency across Reading, Writing, and Mathematics instead of relying on one strong area to hide repeated weaknesses in another.
