OAT: Focused Review Notes
Focused review map
These OAT notes organize preparation around skills that deserve repeated retrieval and deliberate practice. They supplement, rather than replace, the current official outline. The OAT uses four tests: Survey of the Natural Sciences, Reading Comprehension, Physics, and Quantitative Reasoning. Candidates testing in 2026 should use current OAT specifications, including the updated Organic Chemistry outline.
- Natural Sciences: identify the task, select the relevant rule or evidence, solve deliberately, and verify why competing choices are weaker.
- Reading Comprehension: identify the task, select the relevant rule or evidence, solve deliberately, and verify why competing choices are weaker.
- Physics: identify the task, select the relevant rule or evidence, solve deliberately, and verify why competing choices are weaker.
- Quantitative Reasoning: identify the task, select the relevant rule or evidence, solve deliberately, and verify why competing choices are weaker.
Use active recall
Close the notes and reconstruct the method from memory. Then solve a fresh example without looking at the prior solution. Retrieval exposes weak knowledge more effectively than rereading. Mix older skills into later sessions so that a correct response requires recognizing which method applies rather than following a predictable chapter order.
Keep a useful error log
For every meaningful miss, record the tested skill, why the first approach failed, the corrected rule or reasoning step, and a trigger that should remind you to use it next time. Separate content gaps from misreads, pacing problems, and careless execution. If you answer correctly for the wrong reason, log the item anyway.
Final review checklist
Confirm that practice matches the current official format and prioritize weaknesses that still repeat. Practice switching among topics, make pacing decisions before test day, and stop relying on obsolete resources when specifications change. The goal is durable recall and disciplined review, not memorization of recalled or secure test material.
