Good MCAT Score 2026: Scale, Percentiles and How to Interpret Your Result
There is no universal good MCAT score
A useful MCAT score is one that supports your medical-school application strategy. The exam has a defined scale, but admissions decisions are not made from a single national cutoff. School list, GPA, experiences, state residency, mission fit, application timing and the rest of your file matter alongside the MCAT.
MCAT scoring basics
AAMC reports four section scores and one total score. Each section ranges from 118 to 132. Adding the four section scores gives a total from 472 to 528. AAMC uses equating when converting raw correct-answer counts to scaled scores so that small differences in the difficulty of different test forms do not change the intended meaning of a scaled score.
| Score component | Range | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Each section | 118-132 | Performance in one MCAT section. |
| Total score | 472-528 | Sum of all four scaled section scores. |
| Percentile rank | Varies by score | Percentage of examinees at or below that score. |
Percentile is not percent correct
Your percentile rank compares your scaled score with the performance of other examinees. It does not tell you the percentage of MCAT questions you answered correctly. AAMC updates percentile ranks each May 1 using recent testing-year data. For the May 1, 2026 through April 30, 2027 period, the current percentiles are based on examinees from 2023, 2024 and 2025.
How to decide whether your score is strong enough
Start with the schools you may realistically apply to. Review current admissions information from those institutions and use official school data when available. A total score that is competitive for one program may be less competitive for another. The right question is not, 'Is this score good?' but, 'Does this score support the applications I am actually planning?'
Look at the section pattern
Two students with the same total score can have different section profiles. A balanced report may require a different decision from a report with one much weaker section. If you are considering a retake, the section breakdown can show whether you have a specific, trainable weakness or whether your total reflects a stable overall performance level.
Use percentiles carefully
Percentiles provide national comparison, not an admission probability. A higher percentile means you outscored a larger share of examinees, but it does not translate directly into a percentage chance of acceptance. Avoid calculators or posts that turn an MCAT percentile into a guaranteed admission outcome.
What counts as improvement?
Improvement should be judged against your actual practice history and application need. A one- or two-point change can matter in some contexts and be irrelevant in others. If you are retesting, set a target based on a clear reason: a school-range gap, a section weakness, or a practice record that strongly suggests your current official score underrepresents your ability.
When a retake may make sense
- Your current score is meaningfully below your stable full-length practice range.
- You can identify specific content or pacing problems that are fixable.
- You have enough time to prepare differently before another administration.
- The new score would arrive in time to serve your application plan.
When a retake may not be the best next move
If your official score matches your stable practice range and you cannot identify a credible improvement path, another immediate attempt may reproduce the same result. The better use of time could be strengthening another part of the application or building a longer study cycle before retesting.
Do not confuse raw score with scaled score
AAMC does not report the raw number correct on the official score report. Raw correct answers are converted to scaled scores. Because different forms can vary slightly in difficulty, equating is used so that a scaled score has comparable meaning across administrations.
There is no guessing penalty
AAMC states that there is no penalty for wrong answers, so students should answer every question. That fact is relevant for test-day strategy, but it does not mean blind guessing is an effective preparation method. Practice should focus on reasoning, elimination and pacing.
How to use your score report after release
- Write down the total and all four section scores.
- Read the current percentile rank.
- Compare the report with your recent full-length practice trend.
- Identify whether any section is unusually low.
- Check the current admissions context for your planned schools.
- Decide whether to keep, retake or gather more evidence before deciding.
