GRE Physics Subject Test: current format
ETS says the GRE Physics Subject Test is computer delivered, lasts 2 hours and contains approximately 70 five-choice questions. Questions can use diagrams, graphs, experimental data and descriptions of physical situations. Most can be answered from material commonly covered in the first three years of undergraduate physics.

What to prioritize first
Classical Mechanics and Electromagnetism together represent the largest share of the test. If those areas are weak, they are usually a better first repair target than spending disproportionate time on a narrow specialized topic. Quantum Mechanics and Atomic Physics also deserve serious attention because they carry meaningful weight.
Mathematics you need for the Physics test
ETS expects familiarity with mathematical methods used in undergraduate physics, including single and multivariable calculus, vector algebra, coordinate systems, differential equations, Fourier series, matrices and complex-variable methods. Review these as tools inside physics problems rather than as isolated mathematics whenever possible.
How Physics subscores work
The current Physics Subject Test reports percent-correct subscores for Classical Mechanics, Electromagnetism, and Quantum Mechanics and Atomic Physics in addition to the total score. These subscores are diagnostic. ETS cautions that percent-correct values from different test editions are not equated, so do not treat the same percentage on two administrations as perfectly comparable scaled performance.
Use the official practice book strategically
ETS provides a free Physics practice book with a full-length test and answer key. On your first serious attempt, record both the content category and the reasoning failure. A wrong answer caused by a sign convention or unit conversion needs a different fix from a wrong answer caused by not knowing the governing physical principle.
Build a two-layer error log
For every important miss, record the physics layer and the execution layer. Physics layer examples include mechanics, E&M, quantum or thermodynamics. Execution layer examples include wrong model, algebra error, graph interpretation, unit error, approximation error or time pressure. This makes later review far more precise.
Practice graphical and experimental reasoning
Because ETS explicitly includes diagrams, graphs and experimental data, do not prepare only by solving symbolic textbook exercises. Practice reading axes, identifying trends, checking units and inferring what an experiment actually measures. Laboratory Methods is a named content category, not an optional extra.
Pacing strategy
Approximately 70 questions in 120 minutes means you cannot let a small number of difficult items absorb the entire test. Practice recognizing when a problem is becoming inefficient. Make a best-supported decision, mark mentally for review if the interface allows your workflow, and protect time for questions you can solve more reliably.
A six-step study sequence
- Take an official diagnostic.
- Repair Classical Mechanics and Electromagnetism weaknesses first if they are substantial.
- Review Quantum, Atomic, Thermodynamics and Waves with mixed practice.
- Add graph, experiment and laboratory-method questions.
- Run timed mixed sets to improve recognition speed.
- Finish with a long rehearsal and focused error review rather than last-minute topic expansion.
