What the percentages mean for preparation
About half of the test involves calculus and its applications. That makes calculus fluency a central part of a realistic study plan. The algebra portion includes elementary algebra, linear algebra, abstract algebra and number theory. The remaining questions draw from other undergraduate mathematics topics. Build a calculus-first repair plan
If your diagnostic shows weakness in single-variable or multivariable calculus, prioritize that before polishing rare topics. Practice derivative and integral techniques, sequences and series, multivariable reasoning and applications until setup becomes automatic. The goal is not only to remember formulas but to recognize which method applies quickly.
Algebra needs breadth
The algebra portion is not limited to routine equation solving. Review linear algebra, abstract algebra and number-theory ideas at the level normally seen in undergraduate courses. If a problem requires a definition or structural property, write the relevant principle before calculating. This reduces random manipulation and makes review more useful.
How to study additional topics
Use the ETS outline to identify topics that are genuinely in scope and then rank them by your diagnostic performance. Do not spend equal time on every possible undergraduate topic. High-yield review comes from combining the official content map with your personal error profile.
Pacing for a 2 hour 50 minute test
Because the test has no separately timed sections, you need a whole-test time budget. Practice moving past questions that are consuming too much time, then return if time remains. During review, distinguish between a problem that was hard because of content and one that was hard because you spent too long on an unproductive path.
A four-stage study cycle
- Diagnostic: complete a representative official set under controlled conditions.
- Repair: focus on the largest topic gaps, especially calculus and core algebra.
