GRE Practice 2026: Verbal, Quantitative and POWERPREP Study Plan
Use official GRE practice to learn the actual test
ETS recommends official preparation resources, including POWERPREP practice tests, section overviews, sample questions, Math Review materials and test-prep videos. Use those resources to learn current timing, navigation and question behavior before relying on third-party drills.
Start with a diagnostic, not random repetition
Take one representative official practice test or section set and classify every miss. Useful categories include vocabulary-in-context, passage logic, quantitative concept gap, careless arithmetic, data interpretation, pacing and answer-choice trap. The goal is to find repeatable weaknesses, not just a starting score.
Verbal Reasoning practice
For Verbal, separate reading-comprehension errors from text-completion and sentence-equivalence errors. When reviewing a passage question, identify the exact sentence or relationship that supports the answer. When reviewing vocabulary questions, learn how context and sentence structure narrow the choices rather than memorizing definitions without usage.
Quantitative Reasoning practice
ETS describes Quantitative Reasoning as testing arithmetic, algebra, geometry, data analysis and quantitative interpretation. Build accuracy first, then timing. For every missed problem, write the first incorrect step and solve a fresh problem using the same concept. ETS's Math Review is useful for rebuilding fundamentals.
Analytical Writing practice
Do not spend all preparation time on Verbal and Quant. Analytical Writing is reported separately on a 0-6 scale. Practice producing a focused, organized response under time pressure and compare your work with official scoring guidance and sample responses.
Use mark-and-review strategically
The GRE software lets you mark questions, move within a section and change answers while time remains. Practice deciding quickly when to skip and return. Mark-and-review is useful only if it prevents one difficult question from consuming time needed for easier items.
A four-week GRE study cycle
| Week | Main focus |
|---|---|
| 1 | Official diagnostic and error classification |
| 2 | Targeted Verbal and Quant skill repair |
| 3 | Timed mixed sets and section pacing |
| 4 | POWERPREP rehearsal, review and test-day readiness |
How often should you take full practice tests?
Use them as checkpoints, not as the entire study plan. A full test without deep review can repeat the same mistakes. After each test, spend more time understanding misses and uncertain correct answers than simply recording the score.
Build an error log
Record the question type, why your first approach failed, the correct principle and one follow-up action. Include correct guesses. The log should shrink over time as recurring error types become less frequent.
Retake preparation
If you already took the GRE, ETS offers a Diagnostic Service that can help show the types of Verbal and Quantitative questions you answered correctly or incorrectly, organized by skill area, difficulty and time spent. Use that evidence to avoid repeating the same study plan.
FAQ
What is the best GRE practice test?
Official POWERPREP tests are the best starting point for learning current test behavior because ETS creates the GRE.
Should I study Verbal and Quant every day?
Balance depends on your diagnostic. Put more time into the largest repeatable weakness while keeping the stronger section active.
Can I skip questions and come back?
Within a section, ETS allows marking and review while time remains.
Use the GRE 8-week study plan if you need a longer preparation runway.
