There is no one good GRE score for every applicant

GRE scores should be interpreted in the context of the programs you are applying to. A score that is strong for one field or school may be less competitive for another. Use current program requirements and admitted-student data when available instead of relying on a universal internet cutoff.

Current GRE score scales

MeasureScale
Verbal Reasoning130-170 in 1-point increments
Quantitative Reasoning130-170 in 1-point increments
Analytical Writing0-6 in half-point increments

Percentile is not percent correct

A percentile rank tells you how your scaled score compares with other test takers. It is not the percentage of questions you answered correctly. Use percentiles to understand relative standing, but do not turn them into an admission probability.

Program context matters more than a generic total

GRE General Test reporting does not use a single combined official total score in the same way some exams do. Programs often look separately at Verbal, Quantitative and Analytical Writing. A quantitative graduate program may care more about Quant, while a humanities program may weigh Verbal and Writing more heavily.

Compare your score with the right evidence

  1. Check whether the program requires, accepts or ignores GRE scores.
  2. Look for current score ranges or medians published by the program.
  3. Compare each GRE measure separately.
  4. Consider the rest of your academic and application profile.
  5. Decide whether a retake has a realistic chance of changing the result enough to matter.

When a retake may make sense

A retake can be reasonable when your official result is clearly below a stable official-practice range, a specific section is hurting programs that value it, or you can identify fixable content or timing problems. Remember that ETS requires at least 21 days between GRE General Test attempts.

When a retake may not help

If your official score matches repeated practice results and you have no new preparation strategy, retesting quickly may reproduce the same outcome. Time may be better spent on coursework, statements, recommendations, research or other application components.

Do not chase a score that your programs do not need

Higher is generally stronger, but marginal improvement has diminishing value when a score is already competitive for your target programs. Set a target based on actual school data rather than trying to reach an arbitrary number because it is popular online.

Use ScoreSelect strategically

If you have multiple administrations, ETS's ScoreSelect option can let you choose which reportable test dates to send, subject to each program's own rules. Some programs require all GRE administrations, so check before assuming you can omit a score.
