Choose the Discipline that fits your background, not the internet's favorite

The current CPA Exam requires one Discipline after the three Core sections. Your options are BAR, ISC and TCP. AICPA's guidance is clear: candidates should choose based on education, experience and professional interests rather than simply selecting the section with the highest published pass rate.

BAR: Business Analysis and Reporting

BAR tends to fit candidates who are comfortable with advanced financial reporting, analysis and related business topics. If FAR-style material is a strength and your coursework or job exposes you to complex reporting, analytics or finance-oriented accounting work, BAR may offer meaningful overlap.

ISC: Information Systems and Controls

ISC fits candidates interested in systems, controls, technology risk, security and assurance over information systems. It can be attractive to candidates with IT audit, internal controls, SOC-related, cybersecurity-governance or systems coursework. ISC also has a different scoring weight from the other sections: 60% MCQs and 40% task-based simulations.

TCP: Tax Compliance and Planning

TCP is designed around deeper tax compliance and planning knowledge. Candidates with tax coursework, tax-season experience or a tax-focused career path may find the content more familiar. Its recent pass rate is high, but that likely reflects candidate self-selection as well as preparedness.

A four-question decision test

  1. Which subject appears most often in your recent work or coursework?
  2. Which Blueprint can you read with the fewest unfamiliar topics?
  3. Which Discipline best supports the work you actually want to do?
  4. Which one produces the strongest diagnostic result after a short sample of serious practice?

Do not use pass rate as the only rule

Through Q2 2026, BAR, ISC and TCP have very different pass rates. But the candidate pools are also different. Someone with no meaningful tax background does not become more prepared for TCP merely because its national pass rate is higher.

Use Core overlap strategically

BAR can overlap conceptually with FAR and business analysis; TCP has natural connections with REG; ISC can connect with AUD, controls and technology. If you have recently completed a related Core section, that knowledge can reduce relearning time.

Think about career value, but do not overstate it

Your Discipline does not create a separate CPA license designation. Still, the material you study can deepen knowledge relevant to the work you want to perform. That makes career alignment useful even though employers will not see a different credential after your name.

A practical selection method

Download the current AICPA Blueprint for each Discipline. Spend 20-30 minutes scanning the weighted content areas and task statements. Mark topics as strong, learnable or unfamiliar. Then complete representative official sample-test questions. Pick the Discipline with the best combination of familiarity, interest, overlap and realistic study time.

FAQ

Which Discipline is easiest?

There is no universal easiest Discipline. Aggregate pass rates do not account for your background.

Can I switch after choosing?

Your jurisdiction and exam application status control scheduling and section selection. Verify the active rules before paying or scheduling another section.

Does my Discipline appear as a specialty on my CPA license?

No. The Discipline is part of the exam pathway, not a separate CPA license title.
