PANCE overview
What PANCE measures
The Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination is administered by NCCPA for eligible graduates seeking initial PA certification. NCCPA bases the exam on a profession-wide practice analysis and organizes the current content blueprint around medical knowledge and the tasks physician assistants perform in patient care. Candidates should use the active blueprint rather than a generic medical-school topic list when planning review.
Current exam structure
PANCE contains 300 multiple-choice questions arranged in five blocks of 60 questions. Candidates receive 60 minutes for each block. Responses can be reviewed and changed within the active block, but once a block is exited or time expires, its answers cannot be revisited. NCCPA also provides separate tutorial and break time under the current test-day rules, so candidates should practice managing both block pacing and break strategy.
The current PANCE content blueprint became effective in January 2025. It describes both diseases and disorders and the clinical tasks a PA is expected to understand. The blueprint is a guide to the distribution and scope of content; it does not mean every listed example appears on every exam form.
How to prepare
Start with the NCCPA blueprint and compare it with your clinical and academic strengths. Use practice questions to identify whether misses come from knowledge gaps, interpretation, prioritization, or time management. Build review around major blueprint categories, then mix subjects so that practice more closely resembles the integrated nature of the actual exam. Timed 60-question blocks are useful for building endurance and one-minute-per-question pacing.
Clinical review is stronger when questions are followed by a brief explanation of why the correct choice fits the presentation and why tempting alternatives do not. Add periodic full-length or multi-block practice after content review so endurance, pacing, and decision making are tested together rather than in isolation.
Eligibility and test-day checks
Eligibility, application timing, testing windows, identification, scheduling, and other certification requirements can change. Confirm them in the NCCPA portal and current official guidance before acting. Exams.fit checked NCCPA's PANCE and blueprint information on September 14, 2026 and schedules another source review before March 14, 2027, or sooner after a material NCCPA change.
