OAT overview
What the OAT is
The Optometry Admission Test is used by optometry education programs to assess applicants' academic preparation. The Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry is the governing body for the OAT, and the American Dental Association's Department of Testing Services implements the testing program. Official OAT guidance states that all U.S. optometry schools require the exam as part of the admission process.
Current exam content
The OAT is a multiple-choice examination with four sections: Survey of the Natural Sciences, Reading Comprehension, Physics, and Quantitative Reasoning. The Natural Sciences section covers Biology, General Chemistry, and Organic Chemistry. The current candidate materials should be used to confirm item counts, timing, testing rules, and the exact specifications that apply on the candidate's test date.
In 2026 the OAT program highlighted updates to Organic Chemistry specifications for candidates testing in the affected period. That makes it especially important to compare older preparation books and notes against the current official specifications rather than assuming every legacy topic list is still exact.
A practical study sequence
Begin by mapping coursework and diagnostic performance to the official subject specifications. For Natural Sciences, identify whether Biology, General Chemistry, or Organic Chemistry is driving errors. For Physics and Quantitative Reasoning, focus on efficient setup and accurate calculations. For Reading Comprehension, practice finding structure, evidence, and relationships in longer passages under time pressure. Use official practice resources to learn the exam interface and question style without copying protected test content.
For OAT science preparation, mix single-subject review with timed mixed sets so recall still works when topics change quickly. Physics and Quantitative Reasoning should include calculator-free setup practice where appropriate, while Reading practice should emphasize passage structure and evidence rather than memorizing isolated facts.
What to verify before applying
Application procedures, fees, score reporting, retest rules, identification requirements, Prometric availability, and current specifications can change. Review the current OAT Candidate Guide before submitting an application. Exams.fit checked the official OAT site on September 14, 2026 and schedules another source review before March 14, 2027, or sooner after a material OAT update.
