DAT overview
What the DAT measures
The Dental Admission Test is administered by the American Dental Association and is used in dental-school admissions. The current DAT contains four major test sections: Survey of the Natural Sciences, Perceptual Ability, Reading Comprehension, and Quantitative Reasoning. The ADA lists 100 items in Natural Sciences, 90 in Perceptual Ability, 50 in Reading Comprehension, and 40 in Quantitative Reasoning.
2026 administration schedule
The 2026 DAT Candidate Guide lists a total administration time of 5 hours and 15 minutes. That schedule includes an optional 15-minute tutorial, 90 minutes for Survey of the Natural Sciences, 60 minutes for Perceptual Ability, an optional 30-minute scheduled break, 60 minutes for Reading Comprehension, 45 minutes for Quantitative Reasoning, and an optional 15-minute post-test survey.
Natural Sciences covers Biology, General Chemistry, and Organic Chemistry. Perceptual Ability measures spatial and visual reasoning. Reading Comprehension requires careful understanding and analysis of written passages, while Quantitative Reasoning tests mathematical problem solving.
Current scoring and preparation
The ADA introduced a new DAT score-reporting scale beginning March 1, 2025, so candidates should use current scoring guidance rather than older conversion charts. The ADA also published updated Organic Chemistry specifications for 2026. Preparation should therefore begin with the current Candidate Guide and test specifications, followed by targeted practice in weak content areas and timed work that reflects the official section order.
Use official ADA practice materials within their permitted terms. Exams.fit does not reproduce protected DAT items. In the final weeks, practice sustained focus across the long administration schedule and verify test-center procedures, identification requirements, break rules, and any current retest restrictions.
Perceptual Ability deserves dedicated visual-spatial practice rather than being treated as an extension of science review. Build speed gradually across its task types and analyze why a visual comparison was wrong. For the science sections, rotate concept review with timed mixed questions so recall and application improve together under section limits.
Official checks before scheduling
Fees, eligibility procedures, testing locations, rescheduling rules, and candidate policies can change. Exams.fit checked the ADA DAT page and 2026 guidance on September 14, 2026 and schedules another review before March 14, 2027.
